Bali vs Thailand for Dental Work: Which Is Better Value in 2026?

Bali and Thailand are the two most popular dental tourism destinations for Australians. Both offer significant savings, English-speaking clinics, and internationally trained dentists. But they are not identical in terms of cost, convenience, or clinic quality. This guide compares both destinations across every factor that matters for dental tourists.

Visa Requirements

Australians visiting Bali need a Visa on Arrival (approximately AUD 50) valid for 30 days, extendable for another 30. An e-VOA can be applied for online before travel. From September 2025, all travellers to Indonesia must complete the All Indonesia Declaration Form online within 3 days before arrival.

For Thailand, Australians receive a free 60-day visa exemption on arrival. No application required. This gives Thailand a slight edge for longer treatment stays.

The Verdict: Which Is Better Value?

For most Australians, Bali offers better overall value for dental work in 2026. Dental prices are lower across most procedure categories, flights are shorter and often cheaper, and the destination already has strong familiarity for most Australian travellers. Thailand's edge is in medical infrastructure (more JCI-accredited hospitals) and visa flexibility for longer stays.

Clinic Quality and Accreditation

Thailand has a more established medical tourism infrastructure than Bali, with several JCI-accredited hospitals. JCI is the global gold standard for hospital accreditation, and Bangkok Hospital, Bumrungrad, and Phuket International Hospital all hold this credential. Bali does not yet have JCI-accredited dental facilities, though leading clinics like BIA Dental Center (4.9 stars, 1,150+ reviews) and Bali Family Dental Care (4.9 stars, 510 reviews) operate at international standards with PDGI-registered dentists, many of whom have trained overseas.

That said, most dental tourism does not take place in hospitals. It takes place in standalone dental clinics, and at that level, Bali and Thailand are comparable in terms of equipment, materials, and practitioner skill. The JCI advantage matters more for patients seeking hospital-based procedures or who want the institutional safety net of a large medical facility.

Daily Living Costs

During a dental trip, your non-dental expenses also affect the total cost comparison:

  • Accommodation: Bali mid-range hotels run AUD 70 to 100 per night in Seminyak or Kuta. Bangkok equivalent areas are AUD 60 to 90. Both are affordable, but Bali edges slightly higher in peak season.
  • Food: Both destinations are extremely affordable for Australian visitors. Expect AUD 15 to 30 per day for meals at local restaurants in either location.
  • Transport: Grab operates in both Bali and Bangkok. Bangkok also has the BTS Skytrain and MRT, which gives it a significant transport advantage for patients visiting hospital-based clinics along the rail network.

If you are travelling from Perth and need All-on-4 or other complex work, run the total trip cost numbers for both. If you are anywhere else in Australia and looking for implants, veneers, or crowns, Bali is almost certainly the better financial choice.

Accommodation and Recovery Comparison

Both Bali and Thailand offer excellent recovery environments for dental tourists. Bali has an advantage in the wellness and relaxation category: Seminyak and Ubud are world-class recovery environments with healthy food, spa treatments, and a slower pace of life. Thailand (particularly Bangkok) has the advantage of modern urban infrastructure, hospitals with dedicated patient lounges, and a medical tourism industry that has been operating for decades longer than Bali's.

For patients needing complex procedures like All-on-4 or multiple implants, the recovery environment matters. Most patients report that Bali's relaxed atmosphere makes the recovery period more comfortable, while Bangkok's proximity to large hospitals provides greater peace of mind for high-risk cases.
